LG G7 ThinQ review: Big brains, bigger yawns - romanthiche

In a vacuum, the LG G7 ThinQ would plausibly be in the running for best Android phone of the class. But when considering everything other on the market (including LG's possess handsets), LG mightiness have been better off just skipping the G7 entirely.

With the notch visible, the G7 looks a little unbalanced

That's not to tell it's a bad phone (note my 4-stellar rating), or even one I wouldn't recommend. Information technology's retributory that in that location's nothing nearly the G7 that will matter a year from at present. It's a good ring with good looks and good specs, but in a sea of good phones with good looks and good eyeglasses, there's nothing about the G7 that really stands out—yet among LG ironware.

Replace the G7's Snapdragon 845 processor with a Snapdragon 835, and you've pretty very much got the V30S ThinQ, which successively is a modified V30. Exact away the G7's display notch, and you have the AT&T- and Google Fi-only V35. In fact, there's so little separating LG's last four phones, the G7's existence only draws attention to the company's indigence to consolidate its premium lines.

A notch aside any other name

As a sequel to the G6, the G7 ThinQ has pretty practically everything you'd expect it to have. The screen size of it has increased from 5.7 inches to 6.1 inches (albeit with a notch), it has the latest Snapdragon processor, and the photographic camera has received a megapixel boost and a dose of Army Intelligence. Basically, this update checks unsatisfactory whol the boxes.

The LG G7 actually looks better with its mountain pass than without.

Net ball's start with the most controversial feature: the so-called new indorsement screen. That's what LG is career the arena round the notch on the G7, but if you're thinking the G7 has revived the V20's best feature, you're going to live disappointed. Number 1 off, the second screen is merely an extension of the current display. And second, it doesn't offer any functionality beyond the standard status bar, and the only customization features to speak of are a handful of very odd color options. I can't imagine why anyone would want to use anything differently a mordant ginmill (arsenic seen in the pic above), but if you want to put a rainbow gradient at the peak of your screen, you can.

The notch makes the G7's CRT screen slightly taller than the G6's, with a 19.5:9 ratio rather than 18:9. But the usable area below the block out has the same Space HD+ 1440 x 2880 resolution as last year's model. LG has stuck with an LCD for the G7 after switching to OLED for its V30 variants, and that's mostly a good thing. On the advantageous slope, LG's LCDs are among the best in the business, with bright, vibrant colors and crinkle rendering. The M+ engineering along display here is Sir Thomas More vivacious than the V30's OLED, using an RGBW colorize regalia to boost brightness (which reaches 1,000 nits) and efficiency (which is 30 less power hungry than the G6). But LCDs are still old tech, then most people would rather have OLED, even with the V30's flaws.

lg g7 g6 compare Christopher Herbert/IDG

Next to the 5.7-inch G6, the 6.1-inch G7 is atrocious.

For instance, as sound as the whites are along the G7, the blacks are nowhere near as deep as they are on the S9, Pixel 2, or even the V30. The V30 has its share of issues with color accuracy, saturation and band (I haven't had a chance to prove the V35, so I don't know if it's been fixed), but the G7's blown-verboten blacks are a tough swop-murder, particularly when you're disagreeable to hide the notch. That's not to say the G7's screen is bad, but when compared to its OLED peers, the difference is evident, particularly when brightness is boosted.

A associate entrap with a flex

For a call with the word "thin" in its name, the G7 feels surprisingly short. At 7.9mm, it's approximately the same thickness as the S9+ and the Pixel 2 XL, merely its even edges give IT a girthier feel.

lg g7 buttons Christopher Herbert/IDG

The new-sprung clit below the volume keys goes even to Google Assistant.

Longtime LG fans will be stunned to discover the G7 has a proper power button along the right edge. The rear fingerprint sensor remains but actually pressing IT does nothing on the G7 (and you bottom't snarf to see your notification spook either). The other push button change is a dedicated Google Assistant key sensible below the volume rocking chair on the larboard side. I'm not steady we motivation another way to summon Assistant, what with far-field mike accompaniment for "Hey Google" and long-pressing on the home button, but leastways LG didn't force its personal Assistant on us. And bivalent-pressing to jump straight to Google Lens is dandy.

Tired wholly, LG has done a fine chore of upgrading the body its G serial without abandoning its progressive character. Sure, the companionship has played it safe with the G7, relying on the notch as the main visual distinguisher between the G7 and the rest of the LG flagships. And the notch is a feature most people testament probably opt to hide anyway. Merely nevertheless, the G7 is still a good-looking phone, even if it isn't as striking atomic number 3 the OnePlus 6 or the iPhone X.

Predictable performance and battery life sentence

The LG G7 has distinctive 2018 flagship specs, with a Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB of Wa, 64GB of computer storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. That means IT performs well, and will likely dying you though a full 24-hour interval, though you'll definitely need to plug it in front you attend bed. In my testing, the electric battery was along par with the somewhat disappointing Galaxy S9, clocking it at just under cardinal hours of covert-on time.

lg g7 bezels Christopher Herbert/IDG

The top bezel on the LG G7 is somewhat thicker than the side, throwing the unanimous balance malfunctioning.

But while the G7's 7,800 Work 2.0 benchmark scores are in line with those of its Snapdragon 845 peers, LG's UX 7.0 interface doesn't serve the G7 whatsoever favors. The latest version is based on Android 8.0, but it doesn't feel Eastern Samoa slick or modern as an Oreo shinny should. The options and customization that LG fans passion are all Hera, but the Oreo cookie additions make the OS find clunkier than it should, and the unanimous thing is less intuitive than stock Android. It ends up making the G7 feel slower than the S9 and other Snapdragon 845 phones, level if it's techicially as proficient.

The Settings app is so overflowing, it's nearly in possible to detect anything without resorting to the seek battlefield, and elements like the app drawer and notification badges are little gracious than they are in Android proper. Information technology's fractious to speck exactly what's wrong with Uxor, and that's benign of the problem. Where LG once paid careful attending to how software integrated with hardware on its smartphones, UX 7.0 Oreo has fundamentally suit sterile and bloated. It might be time for LG to go the Android One route with future phones.

Sound is the G7's standout feature

The headphone jack may be on its last legs, but LG is valiantly holding it along life support, some refusing to hit it from its handsets and giving wireless devotees a grounds to plug in. The 3.5mm phone jack is steam-powered by a 32-bit quad DAC, a feature that was missing from the U.S. release of the G6, and information technology's one of the G7's best features.

lg g7 ports Adam Patrick Murray/IDG

The valid system on the G7 is the real star of the show.

Anyone who's plugged a pair of headphones into the V30's Quadriceps femoris DAC will distinguish you how stark the difference is between it and a regular 3.5mm jack. It's non such that sound quality is noticeably better when listening to a Spotify playlist, only LG offers an unsurpassed set of sound customization options that light up when you connect a pair of headphones. The G7's supercharged earphone jack lets you tweak the reasonable you get word via presets, filters, and balance buttons and sliders, so you get distant more granular ascendance finished your tunes.

In that location's also DTS:X that kicks in when you plug in an international speaker, but the killer sound feature that's exclusive to the G7 is the Speaker on the sound itself. Patc it doesn't cause true stereo sound like the Pel 2 or iPhone 8, its down-release Speaker has a 40 per centum larger driver than the G6 and uses the quad inside the phone As a rapport chamber to deliver deeper bass and louder total sound. LG calls it the Boombox Speaker, and information technology's non a gimmick. Compared to earlier LG phones, the speaker sounds noticeable Melville W. Fuller and louder when lying unstimulating connected a table, and because the acoustics convert depending connected the type of surface, you can experiment with different materials (my ash tree veneer mote board dining table sounded best to my ears).

A step backwards for the camera

Where other phones have their Three-toed sloth engines infused across whol aspects of their OS, LG has put all of the G7's smarts into its dual 16MP camera. I still don't quite a understand what the ThinQ branding is all just about (marked "thin-queue" not "think back," by the bye), merely LG is marketing its camera as a smart matchless, and there's No denying that it's able of taking some pretty great pics in all kinds of light.

lg g7 low light test Michael Neil Simon/IDG

Even in distant low light, the LG G7's Super Bright Camera (right) is healthy to pick up item and color that the Galaxy S9 (left) and Pixel 2 (center) can't see.

In fact, the G7 actually excels in the mop up kind of lighting. Thanks to its Super Agleam Camera, the G7 doesn't need much light the least bit to capture impressive particular. In my usual dark closet examination, the Pixel 2 and Galaxy S9 struggled to pick up much of anything resembling detail, but the G7 grabbed accurate colours and shapes that my eye could barely see. Granted, these aren't high-quality images, just the tech at work here is magnificent nonetheless.

The AI Cam is some other story. LG has well-stacked a brain into its camera app, and when you switch IT on—aside tapping the outstanding AI Cam River button in the viewfinder—LG's AI wish go to work, attempting to identify what you'atomic number 75 shooting and correct the settings accordingly. As you aim the camera, row will appear on the screen to show that the AI Cam is corneous at work. Watching the identifying words wing by is merriment to watch—and make fun of, because it's rarely correct. In most cases, the AI-infused pics were much better than those understood in auto mode. Tranquillize, it took far too long for the AI River Cam to register anything.

lg g7 ai cam test Michael Simon/IDG

With the AI Cam sexy, the G7 was able to pick up the slight purple imbue of the container these eggshells were in, simply it takes far excessively long for it to shape.

By the clock I received a buzz lease me know that the AI locomotive engine had made its adjustments, the photo I'd craved to withdraw was long departed. When IT worked, pictures often had richer colors and stronger highlights than the same shot taken in auto mode, but the time it takes to spring into carry through won't cost worth it for most people. LG says the camera will con over time, merely presumably people will need to use it first, and that power be interrogative too often.

lg g7 saturation test Michael Simon/IDG

While the V30 erred on the slope of oversaturation with this photo of a healthy plant, the G7's undersaturation (right) made it appear sick by comparison. Only the Picture element 2 (center) got it right.

With the AI Cam switched off, the G7 took excellent photos, with some minor struggles. Motion shots were softer than similar ones taken with the S9 and Pixel 2, and some photos were a little too undersaturated for my liking. Additionally, some of the ice chest shooting modes from the G6 have been jettisoned in favor of of a more streamlined experience, so while you might young woman things like Match Shot and Popout, ultimately the app is much easier to sail. Also, the field of view in the fisheye lens has been slightly narrowed to 107 degrees, down from 125 degrees in the G6 and V30. LG says that's to reduce the fish-center effect, which IT does, merely plus through deduction isn't exactly perfect.

We'll beryllium jetting the G7 through our usual barrage fire of tests for our Last Cam Standing series, and then stay tuned for the confirmed word on how IT stacks up to our incumbent champion, Huawei's Mate 10 Pro.

Should you steal an LG G7 ThinQ?

The G7 is a prime object lesson of an in-'tween phone, but it's dificult to say what LG is wait for. Information technology's a clear melioration complete the G6 and the V30, but the G7 International Relations and Security Network't effective enough to stand or excite happening its own. And there are just also many a LG phones to take from. As I mentioned before, LG has far too many flagship phones for sale, and there isn't a complete lot to make the G7 stick ou in LG's own lineup, let alone a crowded Android field of operations.

lg g7 name Christopher Herbert/IDG

The G7's all-glass design is reminiscent of the G6.

With a retail damage of $750 and full carrier support (import there will be deals to be had), I certainly wouldn't recommend against buying a G7. But unless you're specifically looking the phone with the best intelligent or actually want to add a rainbow to the top of your screen, I probably wouldn't recommend the LG G7 as your first option.

At least non without ThinQ-ing really knockout virtually the decision, anyway.
